Luddite

“The Luddite Club Card… the must-have method of digital vandalism. Swipe your Luddite Card when you are asked for a loyalty card at a self-service checkout. Each time you swipe, instead of the company collecting your data, the card will release a virus into the machine. Stand back and watch as the machine splutters and seizes up.”

The Luddite Club Card is a speculative design object that raises critical questions around the proliferation of self-service check out machines. It considers the effects this type of automation has on low-skilled workforces, daily social interactions and the broader economic implications. Written in collaboration with Tom James.
